Felka Leaf Design Information
The more you look at it, the more you like it! Felka - which reads ’Lucky’ in Polish - is the next in line of Thomas Thiemich’s experiments; an experiment that succeeded in becoming an interesting display face.
Since Felka grabs back on some 19th century extremes, such as Caslon Italian and related designs, you might think you had seen this before. Felka’s Capitals are however constructed on the principle of three fat bars on top of one another — thus without the thin bar in the middle, which is usually the case with this branch of display faces. Naturally, this results in a stronger design impact, plus a matching lowercase consisting out of… just two bars! Letters reduced to max, is no overstatement here. Usually, when the lowercase is so extremely reduced, designers grab back onto pure mathematical shapes - as many Avantgarde designers did in the beginning of the twentieth century. Felka lowercase is exactly the opposite of those century-old experiments – it’s lively and fluent.
Felka design might have started as an experiment, but it’s not just a fleeting gesture — it’s a truly mature suite of typefaces now - Slab, Brick, Line, and Leaf - each equipped with a full range of Latin glyphs, standard and case-sensitive punctuation, lining and old-style figures, currency, mathematical symbols, accents, and symbols. In other words, it’s “19th century urge for the extremes, meeting the early 20th century search for minimalism” — all skilfully brought together by Thiemich into a contemporary 21th century type design. And since we live in the 21th century, Thiemich tossed in some sense of the global village: Felka Slab also features an impressive Latin-Arabic counterpart.
So, what can you do with it? — you might ask. Display typography, of course. But even if it will only be used sparingly - in design projects that call for unique, bold shapes - Felka adds up to a true little masterpiece!
Felka fonts are available in OTF CFF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats. Legacy font formats are available on request.
